Fund call as campus takes tragic cry for help to heart

A fund has been set up in memory of the young, hearing-impaired Chinese University student who leapt to her death recently.

Earlier, the father of the student, Li Ching, 26, had expressed his wish for a fund to be set up to assist hearing- impaired students.

The university's Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies announced last week that it is coordinating the setting-up of the Li Ching Deaf-and-Hearing Inclusion Fund. It aims to honor her spirit of helping others. The fund will sponsor local projects to promote greater interaction between those with hearing handicaps and others.

Projects will include the development of hearing-impaired education, research, career development programs and counseling services to be organized by non-governmental organizations. The fund also plans to provide financial assistance to needy hearing-impaired students in the mainland.

Gladys Tang, the director of the center, is calling for public support. Donations can help provide an impetus to much-needed social cohesion activities between hearing-impaired people and those who are not, while eliminating misconceptions about and discrimination against hearing- impaired people as well as sign language.

Li's family has also requested that those willing to help contribute to the fund in lieu of floral tributes. Li worked as a research assistant. She left a note recalling her anguish at being handicapped.

Donors may send a crossed check payable to The Chinese University of Hong Kong and mail it to Room 203, Academic Building 2, Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Please indicate the full name, mailing address, contact number and e-mail address and write Li Ching Deaf-and- Hearing Inclusion Fund at the back of the envelope.

Donations can also be made at Hang Seng Bank account 293-005005-018 ( until the end of June). Fax the receipt to 3163 4179. For further inquiries, contact the university's Lee Wing-man at 3163 4178.
