Anxious wait for torch hopefuls

Olympic torchbearer hopeful Yu Chui- yee and what is now acclaimed as Chinas darling Jin Jing share the same fate both are wheelchair-bound.

TV viewers were recently shocked to see a pro-Tibet protester trying to wrestle the Olympic torch from Jin Jing in her wheelchair during the Paris leg of the relay.

Top fencer Yu, who captured four gold medals in the 2004 Paralympics and who had competed against Jin before, applauded the mainland girl for her calm and for her display of Chinese courtesy in giving credit to those who protected her.

I wish I can be on the dragon boat part of the relay since it is a Chinese tradition and something that is unique for Hong Kong, Yu said.

Another torchbearer hopeful is mountaineer Chung Kin-man.

Chung, who made it to the top of Mount Everest in 2003 after four attempts, said he will be happy even if he does not make the list.

Who in Hong Kong has seen in person the Olympic torch relay, let alone be the torchbearer? he asked.

The Hong Kong leg of the Olympic torch relay takes place next Friday the first in the territory in 44 years.

Yu and Chung will have to wait until Tuesday when the list of torchbearers will be released.
