Torch relay
invitation-only in Indonesia
The Indonesian leg of the Olympic
torch relay to Beijing was run Tuesday for an invitation-only crowd and
under tight security against protesters.
Jakarta Gov. Fauzi Bowo hand-selected the crowd that could watch the
event at the national stadium, Antara reported.
Police earlier broke up a rally by pro-Tibet activists outside the
sports complex, which was closed to the public and guarded by hundreds
of security personnel during the event. About 100 demonstrators wore
"Free Tibet" T-shirts and carried anti-China signs to protest
China's human rights record and its crackdown in Tibet.
Indonesian officials said they moved the event from the streets to the
stadium after discussions with the Chinese, one official said told
Antara. Protests have greeted the torch relay in Europe and the United
States.
"The area has been sterilized and now only those with an invitation
or the proper ID cards can enter," Asep Dayat, a policeman at the
scene, told Antara.
