Efforts Urged to Curb
Sexual or Physical Violence against Bangladeshi Women
About 60 percent of women in Bangladesh are subjected to
sexual or physical violence, mostly by their partners or family members.
Speakers at a roundtable discussion held on Tuesday said such incidents
in many cases are not reported to the police due to their apathy in
preventing such violence.
Speakers, however, called for efforts to bring about a change in police
attitude toward curbing the incidents, which can be achieved through
reforms in police force.
Speaking at the discussion, Adviser of the Bangladesh caretaker
government Women and Children Affairs Ministry Rasheda Chowdhury asked
the police force to be people-friendly.
"The social leaders should also work together in cleaning the
society and curbing domestic violence," she added.
