Retail Prices of Essential Commodities Hit New Record in Bangladesh

Retail prices of brand edible oil, lentil and flour hit a new record Monday in markets in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh due to short supply, market operators said.

On Monday, prices of soybean oil in five-liter can of different brands ranged between 550-560 taka (about 8.0-8.2 U.S. dollars) up from 515-529 taka (about 7.6-7.8 U.S. dollars) one day before, while prices of lentil ranged between 85-100 taka up from 78-85 taka a couple of days ago.

At the retail level, one kilogram of coarse flour was selling at 44-45 taka against 42-43 taka a day ago.

Traders said prices of some other essentials, including rice, sugar and powder milk that marked a sharp rise during the last week also heightened the misery of the people.

Market operators said prices of edible oil, flour and lentil have been unstable due mainly to inadequate supply in the past one week.
