Malaysians Advised to
Vote Early to Avoid Any Bad Weather
The Malaysian Election Commission has urged Malaysian
voters to cast their ballots early to avoid any possible delays due to
bad weather, local media reported on Saturday.
The Meteorological Department forecast that scattered thunderstorms are
expected in Johor, Malacca, Sembilan, Perak, Selangor, Penang, Kedah and
Perlis in the Peninsula Malaysia, as well as most parts of Sabah and
Sarawak.
There would be isolated rain over coastal areas in Perak and Pahang in
the morning, according to the website of The Star.
In Sabah and Sarawak, the department forecast that there will be
isolated rain in some areas.
Malaysian Election Commission (EC) secretary Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor said
late Friday that contingency plans had been prepared for any untoward
incidents or natural disasters, including deferring the election to
Sunday or stopping the voting process temporarily.
Voting of the 12th General Election started at 8:00 a.m. (0000 GMT)
nationwide actually to elect 214 of the total 222 parliamentary seats
and 501 of the 505 state assembly seats.
The Barisan Nasional (BN), or National Front, has already won eight
parliamentary seats and three state assembly seats without contesting.
The opposition acquired one state assembly seat in Terenggaru.
Malaysia's national news agency Bernama reported that some of the
polling stations had been shut down eventually in Sarawak since this
morning due to floods caused by heavy rains.
